  • Lois Goodnough
    Style: Contemporary
  • Contemporary acrylic artist, Lois Goodnough

An intuitive painter, Lois uses negative and reductive painting techniques to create imaginative figurative and floral work. Each painting begins with liberal amounts of acrylic paint and often collage papers applied to the substrate, with repetitive mark-making and stencilling to create interesting shapes, patterns and textures.

With no pre-conceived idea, she looks for the shapes and colour combinations to inform the end result. Detail is added where the colours collide resulting in a “textile-like” pattern which brings a unique quality to her work. Lois feels this is inspired by her life-long love of fabric and pattern as a former textile artist.

Her work is generally representative of the female figure but she does express herself in floral work as well. Regardless of subject matter, Lois is inspired by colour, texture and pattern which is very evident in her artwork.

    Contemporary acrylic artist, Lois Goodnough

Originally from Saskatchewan, Lois Goodnough was always involved in the creation of art. She spent countless hours drawing, painting, learning to sew and design her own clothing. This passion for creativity has stayed with her in one way or another throughout her life.

    Love of textiles

For the most part, an autodidact artist, Lois is inspired by colour and texture, the abstract and whimsy. These inspirations are apparent in her work; particularly her love of textiles and pattern. Until her retirement, art took a backseat. Until she once again found the time and inclination to pursue her passion for creating art. She participated in local art workshops, took drawing and painting classes, and developed her characteristic style. In 2013, on Vancouver Island, she found a very supportive arts community who further encouraged and inspired her artistic development.

    Recognition

As an active Federation of Canadian Artist (FCA) member, Lois was juried into three of their exhibitions in 2018. She received two Honourable Mentions for her submissions to the Vancouver shows, where both pieces sold. Her work was included at the FCA Gallery on Granville Island in Vancouver, a variety of galleries throughout BC, and during the Grand Prix d’Art in the town of Qualicum Beach.

    Exhibitions (present and past)

    2019

    • 2nd Annual "Taste of the World" Exhibition, Try it ART Gallery and Back to the Picture, San Francisco, CA (G)
    • "Spring Exhibition", Try it ART Gallery in Bragg Creek, AB (Canada) (G)

I am an intuitive painter, and I paint with my heart; with delightful patterns, figures and flowers dancing in my head. But I also paint with a critical eye for colour and a fascination for detail. I find such joy in the patterns revealed by the collision of colour. A joy that I hope transfers to those who view my art.
